Carpets Type FAQ

What Carpet Does Not Flatten?

You've probably noticed that some types of carpet never seem to flatten, no matter how much foot traffic they get. Why is that? It turns out that there are a few reasons why some carpet fibers are more resilient than others.

The Fiber Type Makes a Difference

One of the most important factors in determining how likely your carpet is to flatten is the type of fiber that it's made from. Two of the most common types of fibers used in carpet are nylon and polyester. Nylon is known for its strength and durability, while polyester is known for its stain-resistant properties. However, both fibers have one major downside: they're both susceptible to crushing.

That's why many manufacturers use a blend of these two fibers, or add other fibers like wool or cotton to the mix. These additional fibers help to increase the overall durability of the carpet and make it less likely to crush under heavy furniture or foot traffic. However, even the strongest carpets will eventually flatten with enough use.

The Backing Makes a Difference, Too

In addition to the type of fiber used, the backing of the carpet also plays a role in how durable it is. The backing is what gives the carpet its shape and helps to hold the fibers in place. Many carpets have a latex or rubber backing, which can be very strong and durable. However, these backings can also be susceptible to crushing if they're not made from high-quality materials.

Some newer types of carpet have a foam backing, which is designed to be more resistant to crushing. Additionally, some manufacturers add an extra layer of reinforcement to the backing to help prevent crushing and extend the life of the carpet.

Polyamide (Nylon) carpet. Perfect for a home with a busy family, polyamide carpets are easy to clean and stand up to high traffic. The fibres don't flatten easily and spring right back into shape, meaning your carpet will look good for longer.
